This article looks at the effects of demeaning comments administered by coaches. Over 100 current and former athletes were interviewed to receive their perspective. The impact discovered was large, and extremely detrimental to the mental health of athletes. Most of the athletes experienced negative side effects including emotional abuse, a damaged bond with their sport, as well as an injured morale of the entire team. Through personal communication, examples were given of times in these athletes lives where they experienced negativity brought by their coaches, and the consequences that followed. Coaches have been given influence over their athletes, as well as an enormous responsibility to guide those they coach, however, the power exerted often is negative and not inspirational. The conclusion among all of the athletes was that the comments made by their coaches are not motivational at all and there is no room for the unnecessary degradation from coaches in athletics.
